General Criteria for all scholarship applicants include having an interest in railway engineering, maintaining a minimum GPA of 2.5, and being available for interview by the AREMA Scholarship Committee. Enrolled students must have completed at least one quarter or semester in an accredited* four or five year engineering or engineering technology undergraduate/graduate degree program.

The 2020 application form applies to all Scholarships offered by AREMA. By completion of this form, the Scholarship Review Committee will determine which Scholarship(s) the candidate qualifies for. The deadline for applications is December 6, 2019. 
* Programs accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (or comparable organization in Canada and Mexico).

Committee 1 - Roadway & Ballast Scholarship ($1,500) (Undergraduate only) - two awards - $1,500 each

Committee 4 - Rail - Art Worth Memorial Scholarship 

  • Two awards - $2,500 and $2,000
  • Priority given in this order: Metallurgy, Materials Science, Welding, Non-destructive Testing, Railway Engineering

Committee 12 - Rail Transit Scholarship 

  • $1,000
  • Priority given to a part time student working full time in the railway industry; and the student demonstrates a preference for rail transit engineering.

Committee 14 - Yards & Terminals Scholarship 

  • $1,500
  • Undergraduate 
  • Priority given to a student enrolled in a rail engineering class or conducting railroad engineering research
  • Member of an AREMA Student Chapter

Committee 15 - Steel Structures - Professor Wallace Sanders Scholarship

  • Four awards - three $3,000 and one $2,500
  • Undergraduate or graduate 
  • An engineering student in the field of structural engineering

Committee 24 - Education & Training Scholarship 

  • $2,500
  • Undergraduate or graduate 
  • Current AREMA Student Member 

Committee 27 – Maintenance-of-Way Work Equipment Scholarships

  • Two awards -$3,500 each
  • Priority is given to a Committee 27 family member or a family member of someone in the work equipment industry for railroads

Committee 33 - Electric Energy Utilization Scholarship

  • $1,000
  • Undergraduate only
  • Scholarship will be awarded to an applicant demonstrating an interest in the field of rail traction electrification systems engineering

Communications & Signals Functional Group Scholarship 

  • $2,000
  • Undergraduate only
  • Priority to Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Computer Science or Information Technology, and
  • Who has demonstrated an interest in railroad Signaling and Communications
  • Priority is given to AREMA C&S Functional Group family members, including grandchildren  

John J. Cunningham Memorial Scholarship (Sponsored jointly by Committees 11 and 17)

  • Undergraduate only
  • Priority given to students with an interest in the passenger rail sector
  • Priority also given to a Junior or Senior student

Michael and Gina Garcia - Rail Engineering Scholarship

  • $3,000
  • Priority given to student who is married and/or supporting a family while enrolled as a student

Michael W. & Jean D. Franke Family Foundation Scholarship (Includes a special donation from Gordon Bachinsky)

  • Enrolled in the rail engineering program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Michigan Tech Alumni Scholarship

New York Central Railroad Memorial Scholarship

  • Priority given to a student at Clarkson University

Norfolk Southern Foundation Scholarship

  • The student's institution must be located in Norfolk Southern's service area

North Carolina Railroad Company Scholarship

  • $1,000
  • Resident of North Carolina for tuition purposes.
  • Applicant must be enrolled in a North Carolina College or University

Structures Functional Group Member Emeritus Scholarship in Honor of William B. Conway
